Tell Better Stories, Book Better Jobs
Learn how simple job stories can build trust, make your brand memorable, and turn browsers into buyers.
Hey there 👋
Most contractors think marketing is about listing services, showing off credentials, and making sure customers know they’ve been in business since 1994.
Guess what? Nobody cares.
People don’t make decisions based on logic. They make them based on emotion. And the fastest, most effective way to trigger an emotional response is storytelling.
Your Brain on Stories
When you hit people with facts, stats, and feature lists, you’re only lighting up the language center of their brain.
But when you tell a story, something different happens. The parts of the brain responsible for emotion, memory, and decision-making start firing on all cylinders:
Dopamine: When a story hooks us, our brain releases dopamine, the feel-good chemical that keeps us engaged and helps us remember.
Mirror Neurons: When we hear a relatable story, our brain mirrors the emotions of the storyteller. We feel like we’re living it ourselves.
Cortisol and Oxytocin: A strong story triggers the release of cortisol (attention) and oxytocin (trust and connection). This emotional combo makes people feel invested in your brand and more likely to hire you.
Why This Matters for Your Business
If you want customers to care about your brand, you need to tell stories.
Stories about the people you’ve helped.
The problems you’ve solved.
The moments that define your business.
A story does what no ad ever could. It makes people feel something.
And when people feel, they act.
Think about it:
Do you remember a random ad about water conservation? Probably not.
Do you remember the Budweiser commercial where the lost puppy finds its way home? Absolutely.
Because stories stick.
At the end of the day, people don’t hire you because of your certifications or your fancy trucks. They hire you because they trust you.
And trust starts with a damn good story.
For home service companies, storytelling gives you a unique opportunity to show how your work improves lives — one clogged drain, broken HVAC system, or leaky roof at a time.
This week’s action step. Pick one recent job and turn it into a quick story to share online. I’ve outlined a simple format that you can follow below. Use these three questions to craft the messaging for your success story!
What problem was the customer facing?
What solution did you provide?
What was the outcome or transformation?
Now share it in an email, on your website, or as a social media post. Bonus points if you include a photo or quote from the customer.
When you master your message, you stop sounding like every other contractor and start sounding like the one they trust.
Talk soon,
Eric
